The Most Popular Pet Birds for Home Breeding

We all know someone who loves birds, but that isn’t enough for them. They want to breed their favorite feathered friends. As you know, breeding requires some space and suitable environmental conditions. There are some species you can breed at home. It can be an incredibly rewarding hobby for some people. My first breeding journey started from a compact-sized apartment, so I know which is the best species and the most popular pet birds for home breeding, including some tips and care requirements.

Why Consider Breeding Pet Birds at Home?

When I started, it was just a hobby for me. Now, it has become a small breeding business. So, breeding pet birds at home varies for different reasons and can bring numerous joys and benefits. Plus, breeding can be a fantastic educational experience for families and helps conserve some of the bird species. Remember, not all the birds are suitable for home breeding. Always seek small or medium-sized birds for breeding. Here are some example with some tips:

1. Budgerigars (Budgies)

Budgerigars are also known as budgies or parakeets, and are one of the most popular pet birds in the world. They are a perfect choice for the beginners and home breeder (Step by Step Guide of How to Breed Parakeets) because of their size, color, and maintenance. People love them for their playful and social nature. They often enjoy the interaction with their human companions.

Breeding Tips:

Breeding Cage24”L x 16”W x 16”H cage for each pair (minimum requirements).
Breeding Box7”L x 6.5”W x 8”H (minimum requirements).
DietSeed-mixes, pellets, fruits, and vegetables.
BehaviorWatch for signs of mating behavior, such as increased preening and feeding each other.

2. Cockatiels

Many people love them for their friendly personalities and striking crests. Compared to budgerigars, they’re relatively easy to tame and can even learn to mimic sounds. To be honest, their gentle nature makes them a perfect companion for both children and aged people. Breeding them at home can be a best choice if you follow the proper guidelines. Here are some tips:

Breeding Tips:

Breeding Cage20”L x 20”W x 24”H cage for each pair (minimum requirements).
Breeding Box8.5”L x 13.5W x 8.5”H (minimum requirements).
DietPellets, seeds, fruits, and vegetables.
BehaviorLook for mutual preening and feeding as signs of readiness to breed.

3. Lovebirds

I would say, their popularity is the same as budgies, but lovebirds are quite expensive than budgies. They are small, vibrant, and incredibly affectionate. They can make strong bonds with humans and can be quite entertaining. They are the perfect choice for those who want a lively and colorful addition to their home.

Breeding Tips:

Breeding Cage24”L x 24”W x 24”H cage for each pair (minimum requirements).
Breeding Box12”L x 12”W x 12”H (minimum requirements).
DietA variety of seeds, grains, fruits, and vegetables.
BehaviorEnsure you have a compatible pair, as lovebirds are monogamous.

4. Diamond Doves

They are my top favorite birds for their demeanor and striking appearance. They have delicate feather patterns and a characteristic red eye ring. If you’re looking for a bird with a calm nature and easy to care for, then diamond doves are the best choices for you.

Breeding Tips:

Breeding Cage18”L x 18”W x 30”H cage for each pair.
Breeding BoxProvide a shallow nesting dish or box.
DietSeeds, and grains.
BehaviorMonitor for cooing and mutual preening as signs of breeding readiness.

5. Canaries

I personally call them ‘Yellow Feather’. They are very famous for their beautiful songs and bright yellow feathers. Just like diamond doves, they’re relatively low-maintenance birds and can thrive in both small and large spaces.

Breeding Tips:

Breeding Cage18”L x 24”W x 18”H cage is good enough.
Breeding BoxOpen-topped pans, and nesting materials.
DietSeeds, greens, and egg food.
BehaviorWatch for the male’s singing, which indicates breeding readiness.

6. Zebra Finches

Another small, active and very social bird. For beginners, they make great pets as with proper care and attention, zebra finches will come up to you for a feed directly from your hand. They are most famous for their naturally zebra-striped coloration. They’re easy to care for and breed readily in captivity.

Breeding Tips:

Breeding Cage18”L x 30”W x 18”H cage needed for them.
Breeding Box6”L x 6”W x 6”H required.
DietA mix of seeds, fruits, and vegetables.
BehaviorLook for nest-building activities and mutual grooming.

Home breeding of your favorite pet birds can be a fun and fulfilling experience. I always suggest to breed small-sized birds for home breeding, but if you have enough space in your backyard, then you can welcome any sized birds for breeding. By providing the right environment, diet, and care, you can enjoy the process of nurturing these beautiful creatures. Happy breeding!
